Stephen Merrifield, Master of Human Services is American born, raised and educated. More specifically, New England; a region rich in history and tradition with strong links to the country’s British roots. Stephen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Applied Social Relations, as well as, a Master’s Degree in Human Services. He has spent his career assisting others in achieving. Stephen is the founder and principle Instructor/Trainer of Mainly Speaking.
Through his work, Stephen engaged with many incredibly intelligent, motivated and hard-working people. Many of these fine people were working in global settings. They were all certainly studying in a global setting. Most had a common goal. To become global superstars. Most also experienced a common obstacle. They are hindered by their ability to speak English. Now, an essential component of global success. Stephen repeatedly encountered highly educated, productive people who were unable to market themselves effectively. To these people, Stephen is grateful. He has his next mission.
Stephen is level 5 certified to instruct English as a Foreign Language through TEFL Academy, a UK approved and regulated certification provider. Stephen's career began with The Northeastern Family Institute of Massachusetts; mentoring youth and supporting parents to be stronger and better. As he developed leadership skills, he raised awareness and developed services in rural communities, tackling teen sexuality, drug use and HIV/AIDS. In June of 1998, Stephen received a formal proclamation of gratitude from the City of Keene, New Hampshire, USA thanking him for community building, community spirit and community awareness.
Stephen has prior teaching experience at the community college level and teaching ESL online with children. He has participated in many conferences and workshops and was the Keynote Speaker at the 11th Annual New England Parent Aide Conference, Taunton, MA., 1997.
In 2008, Stephen relocated to The Netherlands and began a career in online higher education: first in student admissions, followed by student advisement and concluding with new student onboarding. He has assisted people from all over the world in achieving their life goals through higher education. It has been these experiences that has led Stephen to found and operate Mainly Speaking.
Certification to teach English as an Additional Language can be achieved from a variety of sources, such as TEFL or TESOL. All tutors, at Mainly Speaking, will meet or exceed the qualifications for TEFL - level 5. A Level 5 TEFL Certification is equal to the following European qualifications: a diploma of higher education, a foundation degree, an advanced vocational qualification, 2 years at university and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.
Tutors are required to have a minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching, tutoring or higher education.
